Psychological assistance to military personnel

The men and women who serve in Ukraine’s armed forces are one of our country’s greatest assets. Weeks, months and years of active military service can often lead to emotional and mental stress for both servicemen and women and their families. War has a serious impact on thoughts and actions. Studies show that most military personnel, men and women, suffer from some type of mental or emotional disorder or illness.

It is not only military men and women who suffer. Family members and loved ones often suffer from prolonged separation. Thoughts of their loved ones being in danger day in and day out also add to the emotional distress.

Psychologists assess and help their clients with many problems and disorders. Inquiries that military psychologists typically receive include the following topics:

  • grief and grieving;
  • the triad of war: PTSD, depression, and adjustment disorders;
  • use of alcohol and other psychoactive substances;
  • suicidal thoughts;
  • anger management;
  • stress management;
  • family changes due to military mobilization;
  • military career issues;
  • moral trauma;
  • consequences of captivity and torture;
  • consequences of amputation of limbs in combatants;
  • consequences of changing the appearance of combatants;
  • consequences of combat injuries and contusions;
  • readaptation to civilian life;
  • family and personal relationships, etc.

Psychological care usually varies depending on the type and severity of the mental or emotional disorder. However, military psychologists often offer counseling and therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy, resource-based psychotherapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy), and exposure therapy are very common psychological care options used for those experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. Individual, group, and family therapy sessions can also be used.

The main problems in the provision of psychological services to military personnel are still the lack of qualified personnel and stigmatization by the recipients of these services, who are suspicious, doubtful and in some cases aggressive about the possibility of receiving psychological assistance.

Realizing the great public demand, the Association of Resource Psychology and Psychotherapy created the Molfa Hub project, a network of centers for psychological assistance and psychological rehabilitation for military personnel, veterans, and their families. Together with our partners, we provide free psychological assistance in the form of face-to-face and online consultations with psychologists, psychotherapy, and psycho-rehabilitation.
