Keys to professional success and ways to become a military psychologist
Military psychology is a crucial field of applied psychology, especially during conflicts and wars. It is evident that interest in this profession has increased significantly since the onset of full-scale invasions. Many people today are curious about how to become a military psychologist and what is required for it.
What does a military psychologist do?
Military personnel operate in extreme conditions, putting them at a higher risk of various mental health issues. The same applies to their family members, who also suffer from excessive stress and induced pathological conditions, especially during times of war. The task of a military psychologist is to provide qualified assistance to members of both these groups. To achieve this, the specialist must not only have a solid theoretical foundation but also possess a range of specific techniques applied in their work.
Working as a military psychologist is significantly more challenging than in civilian settings. Firstly, it is dangerous, often requiring professionals to be near the front lines. Secondly, there is a higher likelihood of encountering serious conditions such as combat stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and suicide attempts. Lastly, the work conditions are not always comfortable, requiring preparedness for challenging environments.
What is needed to become a military psychologist?
In our country, you can obtain an education in military psychology at the National Academy of the National Guard of Ukraine by enrolling in the humanities faculty. Previously, education was available in Kyiv, and now it is offered in Kharkiv. This specialized institution boasts the best teachers and all the necessary scientific and material resources.
Higher education in military psychology is quite time-consuming, so many consider courses for military psychologists, where this specialty can be obtained in a shorter time frame. This is especially relevant today, as the war is in its most acute phase, leaving little time for education. Typically, such courses can be found in most major cities like Lviv, Vinnytsia, and others. Moreover, they are often available online. However, it is advisable to have a basic psychological or medical education before taking these courses. Working as a military psychologist is challenging, and one must be prepared for significant workloads and know what to expect in this profession. Additionally, these courses might provide a limited amount of theoretical and practical information, making a strong foundation highly beneficial.
